Ordinary Business Questions Under Unusual Pressure
Independent film and media work presents the same problems as any other closely held venture, compressed. Money is committed before the asset exists. Contracts are negotiated on a production schedule rather than a legal one. Rights have to be clean years before anyone knows whether the work will earn.
Our role is usually to sit on the investor or producer side of that pressure and make sure the paper holds up later, when a distributor, a lender, or a disappointed participant looks at it closely.
Production and slate financing
Structuring investments in individual productions and in slates, including the relationship between the people providing the money and the people spending it.
Production agreements
Contracts with producers, directors, talent, crew and vendors, negotiated on the timeline production actually runs on rather than the one the calendar suggests.
Rights, licensing and chain of title
Acquiring, clearing and documenting underlying rights, so ownership survives scrutiny at the point of distribution rather than failing there.
